Metroid was one of the pioneers on the adventure game genre. The brainchild of the late Gunpei Yokoi, Metroid opened up a huge world of exploration, chock full of secret rooms and items you could search out without so much as a map to assist you. This game also made a name out of its hero, Samus Aran, whose true identity surprised everyone when they found out that Samus was actually a woman, one of the first women heros to venture into the video gaming realm. Metroid was later followed up by a Game Boy sequel and a highly-acclaimed SNES sequel, eventually turning Metroid and its various sequels into one of the most powerful game series in the industry.
