Introduction =============== Well, here I am with a new FAQ for Popeye. This is not the first FAQ I have ever written, but it is the first one I have wrote for GameFAQs. The reason I didn't post any up sooner was because my computer broke down recently and all my documents were deleted!!! I had a half- finished Move List for WWF Smackdown, and that has all gone, 12 hours of hard work down the drain. To cool off, I have decided to write a FAQ for a shorter, simpler, easier game to get a good start off to my life of FAQ-writing. So in any case, please enjoy the guide folks, I hope you find it useful. Bye. :) -Ryan "Beautiful Affair" Harrison ********************************************************************* 2. Game Review ============== The 1982 classic arcade game has now come to one of the best home systems around, the NES. I haven't played the arcade version of Popeye, but I must think that this is just the same, supposedly. It is quite addictive and challenging. The sounds are nice, and controls are easy to learn and get used to, and overall it is a must-have if you are collecting classic games. Gameplay - 8/10 --------------- With three fun levels at your leisure, easy controls and a fair challenge, Popeye has truly earned a high score for gameplay. The controls are simple to learn and get used to, a five-year-old could learn them in no time. With two difficulty levels to test yourself and a two-player mode to enjoy even more fun, gameplay certainly is a strong point in this game. Story - 5/10 ------------ If you have seen the Popeye cartoon series or the film with Robin Williams, then you'll know what the entire story is. Yeah, it's all the same. Bluto has kidnapped Olive Oyl and is persuading her to become his new-wed. However Popeye isn't going to let that happen. Pretty basic, but it's in all the Popeye cartoons, so they should just put it in the game too. Audio/Video - 7/10 ------------------ He's Popeye the sailor man...he lives in a caravan...the tune to Popeye is nice, catchy and quite good! The graphics aren't too shabby for a NES game either, Popeye and Brutus look identifiable. So it's not too bad. Buy or Rent? - BUY ------------------ Classic games are ought to be bought. Popeye certainly is a classic, and it's been 20 long years since we last relived the action of the fun classic on the arcades. Classic games are going up in price, so I wouldn't pay no more than £4 or $8 for the classic Popeye. You could find it at a car boot sale, on eBay.com or any other auction sites. You can barely find any stores that rent NES games anymore, but if by some huge stroke of luck you do, I'd suggest you rent it to try it out. Good things about this game --------------------------- Fun. Addictive. Nice music. Challenge. Easy controls. Bad things about this game -------------------------- Could have made a couple more levels. Overall - 9/10 -------------- Popeye certainly is a great game, there certainly is no doubt about it. The controls are easy, the game is fun and addictive and the challenge for each level can let you test yourself. You can team with a friend and see who is truly better at Popeye. Try to beat your own hi-score to give yourself another challenge. A true classic, well done Nintendo! ********************************************************************* 3. Version History ================== August 7, 2002 v1.1 -- I've fixed up a few spots in the guide, and there are now two new sites this guide is featured on: Royal Ranger's NES Site, and World-Of-Nintendo. Pretty cool. I have also added a new Frequently Asked Questions section. August 7, 2002 v1.0 -- Everything is finished!! I have covered almost everything needed, and have now sent the guide to GameFAQs. -- Checked spelling errors and corrected some things that went wrong in the guide. August 7, 2002 v0.2 -- Changed a few things around and fixed a few spelling mistakes. I'm going to finish off everything else I have to cover in the guide. August 6, 2002 v0.1 -- Started first version of the FAQ. -- Finished entire walkthrough for Game A! v0.2 (Second game walkthrough + everything else) is on its way tomorrow. -- Fixed a few spelling mistakes and updated my ASCII art for the levels. ********************************************************************* 4. Story ======== Popeye was first released on arcades in the US and UK in 1982, it was later released on the NES in 1991. Popeye and Brutus are fighting over Olive Oyl's love yet again and they'll do anything to each other to ensure that they get it! Brutus has taken Olive Oyl, and she will drop love tokens and music notes to the two men from her window. However, Brutus has a few tricks up his sleeve, Bernard and Seahag are going to assist him to try to defeat Popeye. You have to help Popeye climb ladders, punch buckets, eat the spinach and grab the tokens before they fall into the sea. ********************************************************************* 5. Characters ============= Popeye ------ The spinach eating, whistle tooting, Olive Oyl loving Popeye has come back for yet another battle with Brutus in the fight for Olive Oyl's love. Sweetpea -------- Popeye's adopted child, who helps him gain points in the second level (he's the one in the air). Olive Oyl --------- The damsel in distress who will throw tokens from her window to Popeye. ********************************************************************* 7. Enemies ========== Brutus ------ Popeye's arch rival is joining the scene to foil his attemptss at capturing Olive Oyl's heart. You get 3000 points if you use the spinach to knock him into the water. Bernard ------- Also here to try to foil Popeye, Bernard is that guy throwing skulls at you on the first level of the second version of the game. Seahag ------ He throws skulls down at Popeye on the second level of the second version of the game (the harder one). Hawk ---- The birds on the ship that swoop at Popeye. You can easily defeat them with a punch. Worth 1000 points. Skull ----- Bernard and Seahag throw them down at you in Game B. Worth 100 points when you punch them. ********************************************************************* 8. Items ======== Love Tokens ----------- Olive Oyl throws them from her window on the first level. Music Notes ----------- Olive throws them down at you on the second level. Letters ------- Olive throws the letters H, E, L and P from the top of the ship on the third level. Bucket ------ You can see it on the line on the first level. Punch the punching bag to the right to make it fall, and score 1000 extra points if it hits Brutus on the head. Spinach ------- The stuff that makes Popeye extra-strong! You can find one lump of spinach in each level. Grab it then touch Brutus and watch him splash for 3000 points! ********************************************************************* 9. First Game Walkthrough ========================= Level 1: The Seaside -------------------- Olive ------------------------------------------------ | | |<--Punching Bag You start here |Bucket| (_) <---Thru |______| Thru---> ---------------------- ---------------------- |_ _| |_ _| |_ _| = | | --------------------------------------------------------------- |_ |______| _| |_ |______| _| |_ |______| _| = | | | | --------------------------------------------------------------- VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV Water VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV Use the ladder and steps if you need them to escape from Brutus. The spinach is on the left side of the screen if you need it. Do not stay around too long above or below Brutus, as he can still attack you. Watch out for the rum bottles he throws, and use the punching bag to knock down the bucket and hit him for extra points. Collect 24 Love Tokens to make the heart, and make sure they don't drop in the water and stay there for too long. Difficulty: 4/10 Level 2: Downtown ----------------- Sweetpea | Olive -------------------------------- You start here ---- ----------------------- |______| |______| |______| <---Thru | | Thru---> ------------------------------- ----------------------- _| _| _| ===== | | | ----------------------------------- | | / |______| |______| _| | | / |______| |______| _| | | /| |______| |______| _| | | / |Seesaw | | | | | | | --------------------------------------------------------------- VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV Water VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV You can jump on the seesaw and reach Sweetpea for additional points, but be careful, as Brutus can use it too. Use the ladders and steps to evade him again, and grab the spinach when needed. Remember to grab Olive's music notes! Difficulty: 5/10 Level 3: The Ship ----------------- Olive ------------------------------------ You start here ------------ =========Moving Platform ----------------- _| |_ _| |_ _| |_ _ | | | -------------------------- ---------------------- _| |_ _| |_ _| |_ _ | | | -------------- ---------------------------------------------- |_ _| |_ _| |_ _| | | |_ ---------------------------------------------------------- VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV Water VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV A hawk suddenly takes Olive to the top of the ship where she is totally helpless and relies on Popeye to come to her rescue. She will throw down the letters H, E, L and P, and for each one Popeye grabs, a ladder rung is built on the left side of the ship. Once you collect enough, you will be able to reach Olive. The spinach is on the right side of the screen if needed. It is quite difficult to avoid Brutus here, as he can cross the gaps, and it's quite tricky to reach him when you have eaten the spinach. The hawks will also have a go at you, they can be taken out with a punch. Use the moving platform near the top of the ship to grab letters going down. Difficulty: 7/10 ********************************************************************* 10. Second Game Walkthrough =========================== The second version of the game (also known as Game B) can either be selected from the main menu, or you can play it straight after you complete Game A successfully. The differences between the two versions is that Game B is slightly more difficult. Seahag and Bernard join in to throw skulls at Popeye, and Brutus attacks Popeye from above and below a bit more often. Here's the walkthrough for this version anyway... Level 1: The Seaside -------------------- Exactly the same as the first version of the game, except Bernard appears in the upper-right hand corner of the screen about five seconds after starting and throws skulls down at Popeye. Punch them to get points, but watch out for Brutus sneaking up. The spinach is very helpful here, so use it whenever necessary. other than that, you should be fine. Difficulty: 6/10 Level 2: Downtown ----------------- Here's where it gets difficult. Seahag will throw skulls at Popeye from the upper-right hand corner of the screen, where at the same time you have to be avoiding Brutus. Use the spinach and use the seesaw to get away from Brutus and reach Sweetpea for additional points. Difficulty: 8/10 Level 3: The Ship ----------------- Brutus has a bit of an advantage here, as he can cross gaps and can attack you from above and below more often. Watch out for hawks. Plus, the spinach time runs out quicker in Game B, so make sure you use it wisely, as it's tricky to get your hands on Brutus. Grab the letters before they get to the bottom, because Brutus spends a lot of time down there. Difficulty: 8/10 ********************************************************************* 11. Frequently Asked Questions ============================== Q: What's a good way to score more points? A: Try to grab the things Olive Oyl drops from a higher level, use the bucket and the spinach to KO Brutus, reach Sweetpea on the second level while in Spinach mode. Q: Can I post your guide on my site? A: Sure, but make sure you have my strict permission. Q: How can you stay away from Brutus safely on the third level! He always gets me! A: Try to stay two levels above him. Otherwise, luck will have to pull you through. Q: This game isn't that good. A: I don't really care. Q: Can you get spinach more than once on one level? A: Only if you die. Otherwise, no. ********************************************************************* 12. Hints ========= - When you get the spinach, Brutus runs away from you. If he approaches any staircases he looks at them for a moment before climbing them. Since Popeye can run faster than Brutus, you can use this moment of time to grab him. - On the second level you get 500 points for reaching Sweetpea. You get 1000 if you are in 'Spinach mode'. - Try to grab the things Olive drop at a higher level; you get more points. - Use the bucket on the first level to temporarily stun Brutus and get past him if you need to. - To be REALLY safe from Brutus, stay two levels above him. ********************************************************************* 13.
