Ed the Moogle presents Mostly useless Super Mario Brothers 1, 2 and 3 Game Genie codes by Ed the Moogle Version 0.45 Most up-to-date version is available at http://www.angelfire.com/games3/edthemoogle Don't copy these without giving proper credit. Unlike my other files, you can copy this one partially and use parts of it in different formats (for example: an HTML code list for SMB1), so long as I'm getting proper credit. Each and every one of these codes is safe (I haven't heard of any NES games being permanently messed up from Game Genie codes, except for a few with battery backup, which none of these games have...). Many thanks to Adam Blake, who inspired me to create these, and I used and altered some of his codes in this list. I also used some codes off the Game Genie Code Creator's Club homepage, and any thanks not specifically given are acknowledged. They may be useless, but they're a lot of fun to fool around with! "The key to a good code is its uselessness." -Adam Blake A couple of things I've noticed while altering codes. (When I say "strand" I mean a group of codes with similar effects, usually taking a code and just changing one letter to create new effects, like the ZTEOAK family in the SMB3 section). 1) A code "strand" tends to only work with one row of letters. For the rest it either doesn't do anything or freezes the game. Most of the time, this is true. 2) In a "strand" of codes, you usually can only change one letter to achieve similar effects. Changing more than one often results in a failed code (either a freeze or no effects at all). 3) Since there are 16 letters to choose from, I'm assuming each one stands for a different number in Hex code. The next step, of course, is to figure out which letters correspond to each number... SMB Note: I used these codes with a Super Mario/Duck Hunt/Track Meet cart, so some or all of these may not work on your version of the game. Behavior Codes YYTOZA- Start with 100+ extra lives. Codes created by other people The following codes are from http://www.angelfire.com/games2/codehut Not sure what version these work on. Thanks to t_hedstrom@yahoo.com for these codes. VVAANY timer counts up instead of down!! This code basically gives you as much time as you want to finish a level. The longer you take to finish a level, the more points you get at the end!! AETLTK jump as high as you want! Works while standing, running, or turbo running! (No need to enter 3 seperate jump codes anymore, because this one code will do the work of all 3 jump codes in the Galoob code book. Plus, this code allows you to jump MUCH higher than any of the Galoob codes.) PIATYP enemies can go thru pipes, walls, and blocks! Mario (as usual) can't go thru pipes, walls, or blocks. This code really changes the way you play SMB. AEAENT Mario can jump higher when walking, running, or turbo running! Also, he jumps further (only when normal running). PAZSKO once you turn into Fire Mario, you will always be able to shoot fireballs, even if you turn small again (until you die). Also, if you touch an enemy, it will make you power-up!! (On some emulator ROMs, the code will make you invincible.) ANTOSA ever have trouble remembering which pipes you can and can't go down? Well, this code solves that problem! The pipes you can't go down are upside-down, the pipes you can go down are normal. PAASNO take no damage from most enemies! Depending on which version of SMB you are using, you may have to either become Big Mario, or jump on one enemy before becoming invincible.(NOTE: this code doesn't work against the potted plants.) PAZSSO similar to above YSAOPE + YEAOZA "Level Select" code!! Lets you start on any world you want! Here is how to get to the level select screen: When you first start out, you are in a new world (0-1) and you have to finish this level to get to the level select screen. Here's how: Swim (yes swim) past the first pipe you see and keep going until you see some water at the bottom of the screen. Swim over the top of the blocks that are above the water, but not too far. Then swim down and backwards a little to drop down through the little opening in the blocks that lets you get to the bottom of the screen. This part is very important because if you aren't at the bottom part of the screen, you won't be able to finish the level. Once you get to the lower part of the screen, just keep going to the end of the level. When you get to the end, it will say "Thank You Mario, but our Princess is in Another Castle". To get the game to continue, you have to press "B". Now your at the "Level Select" screen! Just press "B" until you see the world you want (at the top of the screen), and then press "Start". AAGOPO mario can swim everywhere, and you start some worlds about 1/2 way thru. By changing the first letter to P,Z,L, or G, you can adjust where you start the levels. If you change the first letter to a "G", then you will start some worlds right next to the flag pole! (and mario can swim!) VGYOKK time starts at 900 (instead of 400) GUAOPO start with 400 more seconds, and invincibility for the first 10 seconds. VTTNYA mario skates like gumby LEAOGK opens route to minus world! (at end of 1-2) VGANYA mario always walks crouched down VTLNYA mario turns big when he walks UATIUA mario walks right thru enemies OKGASA everything is invisible except mario & enemies PAAPIK new block world NVAOGK new maze world ZLAOKK new mystery world PLAOKG new underwater worlds SVPOUU most holes are gone NLTOGK mario starts out swimming VGAOPO most worlds are different, music is different, you can also walk right into the minus world(1-2), plus if you fall down a hole, instead of dying, you end up in a coin room! GSAENT you can position mario anywhere on the screen (even when he's moving) by holding down the "A" button on controller #2. ASAENT new hidden world OLAOKK new cloud world NVPOKG new bonus worlds NNPOKG new warp zone world ONZOGG new secret world PLLOVG new 1-1 world VTPOZG newer 1-1 world PLGOKG new worlds. Press reset to start in a different world. VTPOZI you can jump over the castle at the end of world 1-1 and keep on going. Also, going down tubes does weird things. KEATPE most enemies are invisible, but they die when you touch them. KEATZE enemies don't die when you jump on them, so by jumping on the same one over and over, you get several 1 up's. But shooting them does kill them. UAYIUA take no damage from touching enemies! NYTELN items that were worth 1,000 points, are now worth 1,000,000,000 points!! (if I'm not mistaken, thats one Billion points.) Basically, just add 6 zeros to what the item was worth. So if an item was worth 100 points, now it's worth 100,000,000 points. Actually, what this code does, is add 4 more zeros between the score and the number of coins collected. So the score counter has 12 digits, instead of only 6. The last two digits are really the coin counter, but looks like it's part of the score counter. The code does have one little glitch. On worlds that have a light background (like 1-1), the score is a little hard to see. But on screens with a dark background (like 1-2, coin rooms, etc.), the score shows up just fine. So if you are having trouble seeing the score in the first world (1-1), just go down the tube to the coin room, or loose a life, or finish the level. The score shows up fine in 1-2. YNAOPO time starts at 150 instead of 400 (plus about 30 seconds of invincibility at the start of every life). LEAOPO time starts with one extra minute (460 instead of 400). LXAOPP time starts at 600 instead of 400 (plus about 10 seconds of invincibility at the start of every life). GVAOPP time starts at 995 instead of 400 (plus about 20 seconds of invincibility at the start of every life). TSLIIT most enemies are gone TSPIIT all enemies are gone! (Sorry, this code doesn't seem to work on the SMB only version.) VGANZA little mario turns big when he jumps VGANPA big mario turns little when he jumps VTLNGA when little mario walks, he turns big, little, big, little, big, little, etc... VTYNYA mario has a seizure when he walks (his legs move much faster than he's walking). NEPELA play as Game Boy mario (everything is black & white). VGANAA when mario jumps while running, his little legs start running in mid air. NTPOLE everything is offset by about 2 inches NTPOLT everything is different, plus castle is missing at end so mario keeps walking forever. NTPOPT almost a solid row of coin blocks and tubes in 1-1. AXAENT invisible worlds. See how good your memory is. NGPOKK mario starts out swimming in a completely new green underwater world. ZSNENT mario turns into the invisible man. This code works on both versions but does different things. ASTETE play at night SSASSA invincibility! Let an enemy touch you and see what happens. AALLEY most enemies are frozen! PIGOAP swim without water (you're always swimming) VTLOKK 1-1 enemies are gone or different, especially if you go down the tube. (can't go past 1-1). AETLIK super mega jump, standing start only. If you try to jump while running, you can barely jump at all. But jumping when standing still, lets you jump as high as you want! If you hold down the button for 3 minutes, Mario will keep climbing higher, and higher for 3 minutes! The clock even stops running! Then, if you let go of the button, it will take Mario 3 more minutes to fall back to the ground! Also notice that this code is completely different than any of the Galoob jump codes in the book. GETLYG Mario has semi lunar descent. This means that when you jump, you float back to the ground instead of just droping. This code works for standing, running, or turbo running. VGAOKK new cloud world (use with PIGOAP) VGPOKG new water world VTPOKK new underground world ASAOGG new maze world (use with PIGOAP and be ready to press jump button as soon as game starts). NGPOKG start at 1-2 NGZOKK start on world 3 ??? (use with PIGOAP) VTPOKG start on world 5 ??? NTPOKK start on world 6 ??? OVAAAE slow-motion, plus other neat stuff SYLOKG no enemies, or in different places (use with PIGOAP or AETLTK to help get past some levels, like 1-2). SYLOGK Mario swims instead of walking in all blue background worlds. YETLYG Mario has variable jump heights. Sometimes he jumps high, sometimes low. PETLYG similar to above code KTLOKK different enemies in 1-1 (flying fish will appear if you are using the SMB only version, also, you can't get past 1-1). VGAOGG + ZLAOKK cool underwater world TEGOGG another maze world (stuck in 1-1) NTLOGK Mario swims in some worlds (and different enemies). EAZLIT Mario can't shoot VGLOKK all worlds have different or missing enemies (use with PIGOAP or AETLTK to help get past some levels. Also, if you use this code with the SMB only version, you can't get past 1-1, but if you use the SMB/Duck Hunt version, you can get past 1-1.) AITOSA Mario walks past castle at end of 1-1 and keeps on going forever (this is the first code that I ever made for SMB. WOW! :-)). STPONE all castles are missing, but game still plays normally. NTPOLS after the first pipe, mario keeps on going forever (no obsticles). GNATUE enemies follow you! (Best if you use this code with SSASSA). UATIUE invincibility! Mario walks right thru enemies. (this code is completely different than my SSASSA invincibility code). PLAOKK starts out in new cloud world (or underwater world if you have SMB only version), then you drop down to some new underwater worlds. TTPOZG 1-1 has stuff from other worlds. Cool. TPPOZG 1-1 is very different and much longer than normal. Also, if you die, when you come back, your at the flag pole, and after you jump on the pole, you keep on going past lots of neat stuff, and then you fall down a hole and the game starts to freak out. (It's never the same.) PAZULG Mario can float for a very long time. You have to press and hold the jump button for this code to work right. Only works from a standing start. (This is just a simple modification of a Galoob code). PLZOKG start at 2-1 ?? STPENT x-ray vision (bizarre). Shows where hidden blocks are. PLZOKK start at 2-1 ??, then it goes to 1-2. (use with PIGOAP). VTLNKA it rains "200 point" icons TAAPIG almost a solid row of blocks in 1-1, and 1-2 (can't get past 1- 2). PAAPIK similar to above, except you can get past 1-2 NIYNEE in 1-1, the enemies have hammers PLAPKG start at World 3-1 ?? LSAENT + ZLGOKG new worlds (hold "Right" on controller #1, and use controller #2 to control Mario). ASAENT + NTPOPI at the end of a new underwater world, Mario keeps going for a LONG time, and while he is walking, you get to see lots of graphics from different parts of the game. ASAENT + NTPOZT new underwater world OLZPKG new underwater worlds YSAENV starts out in underwater world, then goes to 1-1 if you die. ISAENT if you press the "A" button, you can position Mario anywhere on the screen. If you don't press the "A" button, the screen won't scroll. ASAEVT worlds are different (this code works very differently depending on which version of SMB you have.) ASAENP all worlds are very weird & different colors YLAOKK some new worlds. You get to swim in most of them. ILAPKK start at world 2-1 ? (only goes 2-3 levels) YLAOKK + ILAPKK 6 or 7 new worlds! (always swimming) TEYVPA enemies that are up on blocks don't fall down (and other oddities). TTLEXP worlds are really strange (NOTE: This code below works best only on the SMB/Duck Hunt version. YSYENT there are different enemies in 1-2, 4-1, etc. That was a long list, wasn't it? After you try a few of these, you'll probably agree that SMB is the greatest game ever for Game Genie hacking :) SMB2 I just have a handful of these. Note: Some of these may not work with your version of the game. There are, in fact, two different versions of the game, and I'm not sure how to tell them apart yet. Note: If you don't notice the effect right away, leave the Sub-Level (you start the game there) and you may notice it. Note: I only used Mario to test these codes, but they should work for the other characters as well. Behavior Codes EPAPPS- Enemies walk off ledges rather than turn around at the edge. ELKELK- Enemies are invincible. Pidgits become glitches. ZTEOAK, ETEOAK, STEOAK, TTEOAK, VTEOAK, YTEOAK, NTEOAK- Mario changes colors when you press Start. Objects fall when you pick them up. PTEOAK- Just like ZTEOAK, except the sky changes colors, too. OTEOAK- Just like ZTEOAK, except Shyguys teleport when you try to throw veggies. ITEOAK- Same as ZTEOAK, except Pidgits are invincible. EPAPAO- Mario grabs and throws objects with his feet! NPYPYO- Can't pick up POW blocks. AEEVLT- Enemies sometimes fly into the sky after you kill them. AGKEXI- Mario slides to the right at all times, as if every piece of the terrain was a conveyor belt. This makes the game a bit more challenging. AGKEKI- Mario slides across the ground as if the scenery were made of ice, and a Flurry that looks like a Shyguy will be following him. Maybe by altering this one, I could find a way to have Mario act as if he were on any kind of terrain. AGKEVI- When Mario is small, he will begin to walk in place after a pause and unpause. AGKEEI- Mario "sinks" into the ground at the beginning. XEGASY- Odd/discolored scenery. Lose the ability to move after falling about two screens. ZEEEEA- Freeze after leaving Sub-Level. LTEOAK- Same as ZTEOAK, except the game freezes after you throw a veggie. VEGASY- Mario continuously takes damage as soon as the game starts, dying within seconds. AGKEGI- Part of music is missing. The game freezes and the music changes slightly when you leave the intro stage. NEGASY- Glitched graphics and objects, mario falls from left side of screen instead of center at intro, game freezes once a door is entered. Replacement Codes KUZETZ- "Fish out of water." KXZETZ- Many Snifits, some level structures altered, severe graphic glitches in some place. LOZEAZ- Many Shyguys. All other enemies gone. ZOZEAZ- Too many Shyguys! There's tons of them! If you want a challenge, look no further! KOZETZ- Pidgets are gone. Large clusters of Shyguys. New/Altered level codes. XOZEAZ- Enemies gone, level structure changed. TEAPAT- Misplaced scenery. EPOPPK, APOPPK, PPOPPK, OPOPPK, ZPOPPK, XPOPPK, LPOPPK, UPOPPK, IPOPPK, TPOPPK- All of these change the sky color. Each is a different color (though most are black and gray). Some of the colors get darker and lighter as you proceed through the level (it may just be my TV, though). AGKEPI- Music slightly different at the beginning of each song. Freezes when you try to exit the intro stage. AGKEZI- Takes parts out of the music and glitches the graphics in the intro. PIGATE, PIKATE- Graphics in intro stage are glitched. Jumping sound is changed. PIIATE, PISATE- Jumping sound is changed. PITATE, PIVATE- Intro graphics are slightly glitched. PIYATE, PINATE- Jump and the game freezes, leaving the music hanging for a moment. PIAATE, PIEATE, PIZATE, PIXATE- Small glitch on "Stage 1-1" screen. PALPAT- "Holes" in scenery and doors. Picked-up objects randomly hover above and below character. EALPAT- Similar to PALPAT, but objects stay floating overhead instead of flashing between above and below your character. OALPAT- Similar to EALPAT, but Mario randomly gets "stuck" in mid-jump. (Alter rest later) AGKETI- Get hit and the game freezes. Makes the game that much tougher. KLZETZ, KGZETZ, KTZETZ, KNZETZ- Scenery is "sunken." Cannot complete level. Each code is slightly different. Yup, that's it. Not much compared to the SMB1 section, eh? Send me some codes for this game if you have any. SMB3 Note: These codes may not work on some versions. Some of Adam Blake's codes don't work on my game, or have different effects that what he has listed, so there may be more than one version of the game or the Game Genie. Behavior Codes AOSUZI- Grab blocks out of anywhere and make holes in the scenery. Lots of fun! It may freeze occasionally, though. One of Adam Blake's best codes! VYXXZS- Mario has black clothes, and wierd things happen when you hit a block. TVXXZS- Powerups fall from above when you hit a block, and you lose control of Mario every now and then when you jump on a block that contained a power-up. SYXXVS- Mario does his Superman impersonation. Up, up and away! AOSZZS- Hit a block and the game resets. Try and get through the game with this one! AOSZZL- Mushrooms don't work. Try getting through the game with this one. AOSZZI- Fly into the air after hitting a block, and come down at the end of the level. AOSZZY- Pirahna Plants randomly become invisible. GYXXZS- Light Blue clothes. IYXXZS- Gray clothes. New Level Codes ZTZOAS- Unable to move on the map. Press A to enter a wierd ice level. Another excellent code by Adam Blake! Freezes/Traps TYXXZT- When you hit a power up block, the world flips around and you are unable to escape (I call it the "Parallel universe"). Give this one a try! TYXXVI- Freezes when you enter a level. AOSZZT- Game freezes when you enter a level, but the music keeps going. AOSZZU- Game freezes when you get a mushroom. AOSZZG- Game freezes when you try to fly. NEUZUGAE- Glitchy map screen. Cannot move. YEUZUGAE- Same as above, but better! AEUZUGAE- Warp Zone. Plays music, but you can't move. EEUZUGAE- Dark Warp Zone! Music constantly changes! This is my favorite code (that I made, anyway). PEUZUGAE, OEUZUGAE, ZEUZUGAE, XEUZUGAE- All of these take you to a "Pattern Table", each with different music playing. Give these a try. Other Codes AOSZZK- Sound for "Power Up" different. AOSZZA- Music on map different, level SFX glitchy temporarily. AOSZZE- "Enter Level" sound slightly different. AOSZZX- Sound for getting hit changes. AOSZZK- Music and sound change when you get a mushroom. Codes sent in by other people These were sent in by t_hedstrom@yahoo.com OVPAIE + NNPOKG all worlds are in the clouds! ASAENT + LSTETA very long new underwater world VTZOZK all outside worlds are different YEUXKGAA start the game as a plant/cloud. With this code, you can go past as many levels as you want on the map screen. ONKXGLIE start and stay as Invincible Mario. But, you can't go down some tubes. AEUXKGAE start the game as ??? Then, if you get hit, you turn into Tanooki. While you are Tanooki, the whistle is blowing all of the time, so you can start flying immediately! AXUXKGAA similar to above UUKXGLIE start and stay as Little Mario (invincible) AANZKLLE no turbo running EANZKLLA 2 Marios when you press "B" The following are from Dalez1999@yahoo.com LLLUUU --> The fire-breathing piranha plants... rather than "breathing" fire, their fireballs will actually appear halfway across the screen. Could easily catch one off guard, to say the least... AEOSSZPA+YAOZTGAA --> After falling into a pit and dying, you'll come back as Jugem's Cloud and pass over stages as you please. Even more interesting is that when you enter a stage, you'll be an extremely glitched Mario, and able to swim through the air as if it were water! IPSIKK --> One of the more useful codes, the loose coins in the stages (not the ones in the ? blocks) can acquired over and over again (you can rack up coins, points, and 1-UPs very quickly this way!) GITLOE --> Heh... after walking a short ways in stage 1-1, an extremely glitched Toad will appear, giving you an extremely glitched message. ^_^ NXSPEA --> Mixes up the stage musics APOZYL + NNXXXZ --> Another very strange code... after going through a stage for a few moments, the screen will suddenly turn gray and you'll end up back on the world map, as if you completed the stage! PIKKEY --> Puts Mario's left half on the right and vice versa ^_^ TXXLUL --> Causes several ? blocks to appear in 1-1 TSXLUL --> Same as above, expect note blocks appear instead of ? blocks GISTYN/VYYTYN/GSSVYN/KSPVYN --> These four codes "glitch" the music, although some of it actually doesn't sound half bad... TOILET --> Empties the stage of all enemies. Unfortunately, the card disappears too, so you can't complete the stage. :( PEZELG --> Causes Mario to "spawn" way off the World Map, but when you press "A" you'll go into 2-player Battle Mode! Strange in the fact that it suddenly transforms a 1-player game into a 2-player game (you can actually control Luigi after the battle)! GPZUAG --> When entering the first stage, you'll end up in the Hammer Bros. stage, but with no Hammer Bros. Kinda useless -_- SZLNZY --> Transforms the "curtain" at the beginning of the game into a bunch of smiley clouds. IASUOA --> Definitely THE strangest of my codes, directly after starting the game, you'll get the ending sequence! It's slightly glitched, however... PEKPOA --> Game gives you 400 seconds for the first stage instead of 300 Again, not nearly as much fun as SMB1, unless you find some seriously wacky codes to send me. Don't hesistate to send them in, after all. This list is FAR from complete! Alter some of the above codes (see the Game Genie instruction manual for more details) or create your own new codes, and see if you can get some wierd effects, then send them to me and I'll add them to the list! Also, let me know if you find some effects for the listed codes that I didn't put under the description. I can be reached at edmoogle@hotmail.com (subject: chocobo) or brunerp@juno.com.
