Color a Dinosaur
By Shady

Color a Dinosaur is the simplest game I have ever played. The object is to color dinosaurs - that's it. You get to choose from 16 different dinosaurs, all based on real life dinosaurs although it is sometimes hard to tell what each one is, due to the simplistic NES graphics. After selecting the dinosaur, you get to color it (what else?). There are 10 colors that you can use, ranging from solid colors to ones with different types of patterns on them. Use the directional buttons to decide what body part you want to color and voila! you have successfully colored a dinosaur.

I vaguely remember playing a game similar to this on a PC demo disc. I used to get those CDs filled with dozens (sometimes hundreds) of demos and shareware loaded inside. Sometimes they would feature little known gems (Commander Keen) and other times they would cram inside an "educational" game similar to Color a Dinosaur. Needless to say, I played Commander Keen a lot more than the coloring games.

I suppose Color a Dinosaur wouldn't be a bad game for kids pre-kindergarten. It allows them to make some pretty funky looking dinosaurs, even if the picture will be completely erased from the cartridge right after they are done coloring. Once the picture is erased, it goes right back to the menu where you can select another dinosaur to color. What a blast..

The best aspect of the game would probably have to be the graphics. The dinosaurs don't look too bad, but they could be much better. The game looks like it was made in the 1980's, but it was really made in 1993. The colors are a little too plain and there should have been more of 'em, but overall the visuals are fairly decent.

The sound, however, is a whole different story. The title theme is perfectly acceptable and so is the dinosaur selection theme, but the sound effects are just awful. There isn't even an option to turn the sound off, so you will just have to either bare with it or turn down the volume. I prefer the latter.

I don't know what that doctor dude and the other developers were thinking when they put together this game.. It is way too simplistic and is quite frankly a waste of a cartridge. If you have the urge to color, don't bother with this turd - instead get a real coloring book and crayons. Trust me, it's the much better option.

Final Analysis:
Graphics 4/10 - large dinosaurs, plain colors
Sound 2/10 - decent music, torrid sound effects
Gameplay 1/10 - color a dinosaur, how much fun could that be?
Control 2/10 - B button selects a color, A button colors the dinosaur
Overall 2/10

My Score: 2/10
